Basic Info
Name:man_outof_time
Bio
Name: Captain Jack Harkness
Fandom: Dr. Who/Torchwood (TV show)
Point in canon: After Captain Jack Harkness (1X12) and End of Days (1X13)

Appearance: Matinee idol good looks and charm- Jack is an athletic, powerful man, and very aware of his physical assets. He keeps his dark hair short and neat, and has ice-blue eyes, and a mouth made for grinning (or kissing, or various other activities he'd love to share). He usually dresses in old fashioned, formal military wear- uniform trousers, a buttoned shirt in some shade of blue, braces and a vest and tie, over which he wears an ever-present military greatcoat.

History: Jack Harkness is a man out of time and place. Born in the 51st century on an off-Earth human colony planet, Jack was caught up in planetary war at a very early age, and had to learn survival the hard way. He was recruited into the Time Agency, a cross-time police that considered itself above those who had to live life 'in the slow lane', as another time traveler once said. He spent nearly 20 years of his subjective time with them, advancing in rank and skill, until one morning he woke up and discovered that two years of his memories had disappeared, erased by the Agency.

A leave of absence turned into going rogue, as Jack took the skills and knowledge the Time Agency had given him, and turned them against his former employers, becoming a con man who stole ships, made friends and enemies everywhere. Money came and went with equal speed and ease, and he was happy to just drift and plan his revenge. Then one night, on Earth in London of 1941, he met a girl and a man- an alien, rather- who changed his life yet again.

Running into the Doctor and Rose dragged Jack away from the easy, dangerous life he'd led, and into an equally dangerous life doing something slightly more worthwhile. In a few short weeks, he came to care for both of them more deeply than he'd ever cared for anyone. The TARDIS became home to a man who'd never really had one. Clearly, it was too good to last. Saving the Earth with his two new friends meant losing both of them; at the time, knowing it's also cost him his life, Jack didn't care much. When he found himself dead, only to be brought back to an empty space station and see the TARDIS disappear without him…Well, he started caring. When, much later, he discovered that whatever had been done to him left him unable to die, returning whenever he was killed, he cared a whole lot more.

Jack's a harder man since then. He's had to be- it took him several years to arrange for passage to 21st century Earth, and he undershot his mark by a century or so. He was stuck in the 20th century, not wanting to risk running into the Doctor again or crossing his own time line. Eventually, sometime in the 1950's, be came to work for Torchwood Three in Cardiff, and eventually became their leader. He's still waiting for the Doctor, and doing what he can to protect the Earth from aliens- no matter the cost.

Personality: After an abnormally long life, defining Jack's personality in a word is difficult. Given a sentence, the job is easier- Jack is charming, oversexed to a fault, sometimes arrogant and casually cold. He's a dangerous man, both for one's physical well-being and for one's emotions. He's handsome, and far too aware of it for anybody's safety. His attitude and demeanor very much depend on what role he's playing: as leader of Torchwood, he's commanding, secretive and occasionally broody. Away from his job, which he hasn't been in a long time, he's a might more lighthearted type.

Still, in whatever guise he might be wearing, Jack's sex drive plays a part in almost every decision he makes. Gender, species, level of initial friendliness or number of partners don't seem to matter, as long as the physiology is compatible. Jack's been known to flirt with plants when truly desperate. He'll flirt on principle, but would never force himself on an unwilling partner. Of course, he's still sometimes puzzled that anybody'd be unwilling…but he's learned to live with it.

Jack's seen a lot in his life, has lost friends and lovers, and those losses, the time he'd spent waiting for the Doctor, have changed him. He doesn't look his age, but he sure feels it. Sometimes it's like nothing can faze him anymore, like he's dead inside and can't feel anything anymore. Other times, he feels more alive and aware than the people around him, and feels smothered by the need to pretend he's a 'local'. A true citizen of the galaxy, living on one planet has been downright stifling for him. For the sake of Torchwood, and the Doctor, and sometimes only because even suicide doesn't work, he keeps going. In his few dark moments, he can get downright morbid, but those moments are few and far between. Most of the time he's cheerful, humorous…have I mentioned charming?
